Addressing barriers to work for disabled people and those with long term health conditions in Brighton & Hove
Learning & Work Insitute recently completed a research and consultancy project on addressing barriers to work for disabled people and those with long term health conditions in Brighton & Hove. The project involved identifying the barriers the local disabled residents faced to employment, volunteering and skills development and recommendations on how the council and their partners could remove such barriers, so that disabled people in Brighton & Hove are able to compete effectively for jobs and maintain employment and/or volunteering opportunities. The research focused on experiences of employment support, provision of support in Brighton & Hove, experiences of employment and support for employers. The methodology spanned three stages: a scoping stage to identify good practice and areas for improvement, a stakeholder consultation to explore views on the barriers and how these could be addressed, and consultation workshops to develop and appraise policy options.
Our recommendations around increasing employment and ensuring that employment can be maintained for these groups were underpinned by the need for partnership working and information sharing, employer engagement and support, and effective engagement with disadvantaged groups. We also emphasised the need for effective leadership and accountability and engaging disabled people in the design and oversight of policies that affect them.
